- Roofers should wear work boots or work shoes with slip-resistant and puncture resistant soles.
- Safety toe shoes or boots are required on most construction jobsites. They prevent toe crush injuries when working around heavy and/or falling objects.
Eye and Face Protection
- Safety glasses or face shields should be worn any time that you could possibly get a foreign object in your eye.
- Consult with your supervisor about the proper form of eye protection for the job you are doing.
- Kettle men should wear face shields.
- Always wear eye protection around welding and grinders.
- Inspect safety goggles regularly.
Hand and Arm Protection
- Wear the right glove for the right job. (Some gloves such as insulated gloves are required to work around electricity and rubber gloves are best for concrete.)
- Make sure that the gloves fit your hand properly.
- Long sleeves are required by everyone in a hot job.
Head Protection
- Wear a hardhat when there is an overhead exposure. When others are working above you, you are required to wear a hardhat. When there is an opportunity to bump your head, you must wear head protection.
- Kettle men are required to have a hardhat under most situations.
- When employees go off of the roof while others are working, a hardhat is required.
- Inspect your hardhat regularly for dents and cracks. Replace them as needed.
- Do not turn hardhats around or wear baseball caps under them. Make sure that your hardhat has the proper ANSI codes for the right job.
Hearing protection
- Wear ear plugs or other hearing protection when there is a lot of noise from heavy equipment or other tools.
- Replace ear plugs regularly.
- Be aware of others and your surroundings when you wear ear plugs.
